Author, artist, and craftsperson Gayle M. Marshall has turned a lifetime of family memories, artistic work, animal adventures, and personal challenges into books for children and adults. Her growing body of work includes warmhearted animal stories, books rooted in her Native American heritage, and mysteries built around old places, hidden objects, and long-kept secrets.
Marshall lives on a small farm in North Carolina with her husband, Mike. An elder of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, she dances at powwows and creates Native American crafts, including walking sticks and rattles. She also paints, works with wood, and designs one-of-a-kind fedora and western hats with a wood burner. Her home reflects the same imagination: she painted the life-size jungle animals that decorate nearly half of it.
Her creative life has never followed a conventional timetable. At age 60, Marshall earned an associate degree, made the Dean’s List, and completed her studies with a 4.0 grade-point average. Five years later, while working full time and nearing completion of a bachelor’s degree, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The diagnosis changed her plans, but it did not lessen her need to create.
Marshall began writing seriously while supporting her best friend, Alyce, through years of breast cancer treatment. Writing gave her a constructive place to direct her attention through appointments, treatments, and uncertainty.
Her first book, Chronicles From the Funny Farm, grew from the many unusual animals she had known. The Beat of the Drum followed, inspired by her heritage. She later created the five-book children’s collection, The Magic Is Still Here series, using the names of some of her great-grandchildren for animal characters.
Mystery writing soon became another outlet for her imagination. Marshall is drawn to forgotten cemeteries, abandoned buildings, antiques, family secrets, hidden rooms, and letters from the past. Her mystery projects include Echoes From the Past: The Mystery of Whitaker Farm, Train to Yesterday, The Forgotten Cemetery, and The Secret Found at the Estate Sale. Her stories emphasize characters, relationships, clues, and suspense rather than graphic violence.
In The Secret Found at the Estate Sale, Marsha is learning to live after the death of her husband of 43 years. Friends persuade her to join them at an estate sale, where she buys an old Victorian writing desk. While cleaning it several days later, she finds something hidden inside that leads the group into the unresolved story of a teenage girl who disappeared years before.
Friendship remains central to Marshall’s life and fiction. She recently returned to Michigan for a class reunion and reconnected with friends she has known since grade school. Her friendship with Alyce also appears in her work: in one story, Marshall gave the main character her own middle name, Margaret, and the character’s best friend Alyce’s middle name, Faye.
After Alyce died on May 22, 2026, and cancer again touched Marshall’s immediate family, writing continued to provide focus during grief and uncertainty.
“I think one of the most important things my own life has taught me is that you are never too old to learn something new or discover something you love,” Marshall said. “I hope my story might encourage someone else who thinks it is too late to begin something new.”
Marshall continues to write stories shaped by small-town history, multigenerational relationships, family, friendship, heritage, and memory. For her, each new story begins with a simple question: What if an ordinary discovery revealed something extraordinary?
